ABOUT
CHANTING
This page has been created to give information about everything
to do with Sheila's chanting & voicework, & is
intended to act as an umbrella for her work in this field. Sheila
discovered the power of chant some years ago through meeting
& spending time with her spiritual teacher Sri Vasudeva,
& has made this Sound Healing medium her own particular
speciality. Although chant is not a traditional part
of the British culture, it has become more popular in
recent years as people discover the health & stress-relieving
benefits of singing & chanting. Sheila chants in
both English & in Sanskrit, usually accompanying herself
on the harmonium or keyboard. She sings songs from a variety
of cultures & traditions including American Indian, Sufi,
Hindu, & Christian. However, her first love is chanting
in Sanskrit, & it is this in which she excels. Sanskrit
is said to be the language of the Gods & was in use among
the priestly classes in India three thousand years ago. The
sounds of the Sanskrit alphabet have a particularly powerful
healing & calming effect on the human organism; they
also help to raise the spiritual energy & aid meditation. This
has been known in some Eastern traditions for many years but
in the West as our culture gradually opens up to the "new"
ancient ways, we are just beginning to catch up
& realise the benefits of using the voice in this way.
SHEILA'S CHANTING WORK
Sheila's work with chant currently includes : therapy sessions
using chant, Sanskrit chanting workshops, chanting evenings,
Chanting with Jayadeva (see below under "Events")
& other events as & when required. Sheila performs
concerts with other musical colleagues as chanting ensemble

.She is also a tutor for the College of Sound
Healing & gives Sanskrit Chanting workshops for
the College, usually in the Brighton area. Jayadeva have
three chanting CD's in the pipeline, the first of which should
be released late-2008.

Chanting at the Bodhi Garden on September 13th. Jayadeva
will be the first musicians to perform at the Bodhi Garden
event on September 13th in Brighton. We start chanting at
11am & will be "on stage" for about 45 minutes.

+ Fortnightly CHANTING with JAYADEVA
chanting group in central Brighton, on WEDNESDAY evenings.
Venue : the Meeting room in Karel Ironside's house at 365
Ditchling Road, Brighton BN1 6JU. The group is led by live
musicians & singers: Sheila on harmonium & vocals,
Gavin on tablas, & Helen, vocals, who perform together

) Please arrive from 7.45 & make yourself comfortable
- bring a cushion or meditation mat if you want to sit on
the floor - we will start chanting at 8pm. We chant for about
one & a half hours with a short break, & usually go
into a spontaneous silent meditation afterwards, finishing

+ CHANT& MANTRA WORKSHOP AT GHAEN LIGHT
HEALING CENTRE in Newhaven. Cost : by donation - suggested
donation £20. This Sunday afternoon workshop will be
facilitated by Sheila & Ja'been . Sheila will teach chant
& mantra, with profound & relevant comment from the
White Brotherhood. This will be the first of a series of monthly
Chant & Mantra workshops at the Ghaen Light Healing Centre.
Workshop dates : September 14th from 2pm to 5pm. This workshop
session is longer than previous meetings & will include
more detailed instruction & deeper experience of the power
of Sanskrit chant/mantra. Theme for this next workshop : Inner
